DOULA PREPARATION COURSE

(Doula UK recognised)

www.adelastockton.co.uk

‘bringing community back to childbirth’

Our course is suitable for anyone wishing to learn additional supportive skills as a lay person accompanying a mother or couple during labour, birth or the postnatal period. This is regardless of whether you go on to work formally as 'a doula' afterwards or not. It may be that the skills you acquire on the course simply complement the field of work you are already involved in, or are sufficient to better inform you while supporting a friend or family member on an occasional basis. All enquiries are very welcome.

Philosophy

At Birth Consultancy we believe that the role of the doula is a way of life, a way of being, and that the journey of the new doula is as much about personal self-development as about furthering her knowledge and skills to work as a lay birth or postnatal supporter. We are the only Scotland based doula course, uniquely focused on Scottish birth and parenting culture.

Our philosophy embraces the spirituality of childbirth and aims to promote emotional wellbeing through pregnancy, to encourage gentle birth, and to support breastfeeding and positive parenting. We prepare new doulas to develop self-awareness and a reflective attitude, to listen without judgement and to nurture pregnant and labouring women, new mothers and their families with sensitivity and commitment.

Course Leader & Co-Facilitators

Former midwife Adela Stockton has worked as a doula and doula course leader since 2002. She is also a homeopath and a mother. Author of Birth Space Safe Place: emotional wellbeing through pregnancy and birth (Findhorn Press 2009), her articles on protecting gentle birth are widely published. Adela is Joint Assessor/Mentor Co-ordinator for Doula UK and a founder member of Scottish Doula Network. The practice of tai chi is an important resource in her life, as is her home and family.

Core workshop co-facilitator Nicola Goodall is based in Edinburgh and has 4 children. Belief in the ability of parents to make their own decisions during childbearing and information being power are her driving forces. With a Dip Ed in Antenatal Education, Nicola has also completed the Scottish Birth Teachers Association course. Having facilitated for around 10 years, she currently teaches for the NCT in Edinburgh/London and runs Wysewomen Workshops for birth and postnatal supporters.

Breastfeeding workshop facilitator Katrina Hampson is a doula and mother of 4 sons. Qualified with the UNICEF Breastfeeding Initiative, she has worked as a breastfeeding supporter in her hometown Carlisle for the past 6 years.
